[/b][/color][/size][/font][/center]Welcome to the vampire application center. Listed below you will find a set of guidelines that you must agree to follow if you wish to have a character that is a vampire. Please make sure you take the time to thoroughly read through the guidelines before beginning your application. If you follow the page down further you will find a list of all active vampires we have at the site. Toward the bottom of the page you will instructions on how to apply for both canon and original characters in this area. If you choose to be a canon please describe your journey to the Northern Hemisphere in great realistic detail.
All vampires should post a full bio in this board. When accepted, your application will be moved to the Bios subboard. Do not begin posting until your application has been approved or your vampire posts may be subject to deletion. [This is mainly for members who are sorted as another type of character who are newly becoming vampires.]
Vampire Guidelines
Before applying for acceptance as a Vampire, please read through the guidelines listed below.
What Are They?:
Vampires are undead creatures incapable of living as normal humans do. They are classified as Beings by the Ministry of Magic and are required to register in order to be granted rights of lawful occupancy in America. Unregistered vampires or any vampire who is known to kill instead of survive on surplus blood supplies is considered a dangerous beast and will be hunted and destroyed.
Where are they Most Prevalent?:
Vampires are most common in Eastern European countries, especially Romania. They also have counterparts in other European countries and have migrated around the world. [We have no canon references pointing to any link to Egypt so please focus more on their European roots.] Vampires in the series have been spotted in the following areas: America [Vampire Cards]; Britain [Vampire Cards, Slughorn's party]; Minsk, Belarus [Hagrid OotP]; The Black Forest of Germany [Quirrell]; Italy [Sanguini certainly sounds Italian]; Romania [Vampire Cards]; Bulgaria [QWC GoF].
How Vampires Are Created:
A non-fatal bite from a vampire causes the creation of a new vampire. The victim is generally bitten upon the neck, dies, and is reanimated through a painful magical transformation. Vampires then must feed on blood to continue to survive. Killing of humans akes a vampire evil in nature [as Dumbledore states - killing is the ultimate evil.] A vampire who only feeds off surplus blood supplies through Ministry Regulation would be able to have more control over their evil nature, but would still be tempted by their 'hunger' for mortal blood. Whether or not a vampire has a soul is debatable, however, for the purpose of the RP we will assume that the process of death and reanimation [against the laws of nature and thus a cursed existence] shatters the soul. The soul is continuously shattered and deformed by killings of victims thus causing an increase in the evil nature of non-regulation vampires. Can Muggles become vampires? While it is less likely, Muggles can become vampires. However, their special powers develop much more slowly and thus they have a lower survival rate over the longterm. [Please direct questions to: admin]
Special Powers:
Wandless Magic
Apparition
Bat Animagus
Agility and Quickness intensified
Weaknesses:
Prolonged exposure to sunlight will destroy vampires
Cannot be exposed to 'holy water' aka: sunlight-infused potions
Impaling of the heart with a wooden stake will destroy a vampire
Crosses repel vampires [not religious but a symbol of the sun or a runic emblem.]
Garlic
Fire
Unusual Behavior:
Vampires seem to enjoy sleeping in coffins and spending time in morbid locations such as graveyards, derelict castles, and mortuaries.
What They Feed On:
Blood, preferably human.
The Ministry of Magic has a blood bank setup for registered vampires to feed on. Vampire goring's or attacks are investigated by the Dept.for Regulation of Magical Creatures and particularly dangerous vampires are tracked by Aurors. Registered non-killing vampires are allowed rights as 'Beings' and are protected from persecution to some degree. Dangerous vampires will be destroyed by all means.
Alignment:
Generally considered evil by nature due to killing humans for food and the cursed nature of their affliction. This can be controlled to some degree by feeding on surplus blood supplies and not harming humans, however the hunger for blood can be overwhelming and difficult for vampired to control.
How They Can Be Destroyed:
Prolonged exposure to sunlight or a sunlight spell/potion.
Wooden stake driven through the heart region.
Can They Have Children:
Vampires are undead and therefore cannot give birth or father children. However, it is possible that a human parent could have been bitten after the fact and thus have human children. In such cases, the children would be taken into Ministry Childcare systems such as orphanages and fostering programs. It has also been a common myth that if a pregnant woman is bite the child she carries will become half vampire | half human. In reality, the mere magical transmute that they are subjected to would kill the infant. Under certain situation the child may serve, but would be utterly human.
Appearance:
Pale, waxy skin from lack of sunlight.? Often thin, gaunt, or emaciated in appearance. Elongated incisor teeth to enable bites and feedings on victims.? Vampires do not have a reflection in a mirror.
Ministry Laws or Regulations:
The Ministry of Magic Dept. for Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures requires all victims of vampire bites to immediately owl in for registration forms and pamphlets. Vampires are asked to not visit the Ministry of Magic offices due to the risk of exposure to sunlight in its offices.
Registered vampires maintain 'Being' status and are thus given rights as American citizens so long as they do not break the Vampire Code of Conduct which states that they must comply with all Ministry laws of acceptable behavior [mainly not killing or performing illegal magic, thievery, biting to create new vampires, using animagus form for illegal activities, etc...]
Un-registered vampires do not have rights in America and are considered illegal and life-threatening residents.
Any killings or attacks proven to be attributable to a particular vampire carries a 'death sentence' - in other words, a Ministry Specialist will be put on the case to destroy the dangerous creature before they can do more harm to the public.
Vampires are not allowed to attend WCA.
Employment:
Due to fear, hatred, and discrimination by wizarding and Muggle society, vampires are not allowed to work in most businesses. Shopkeepers most likely will be disgruntled even by having them in their shop because of the fact that they 'scare off customers'. However, it would take a very brave shopkeeper to turn them away as they make dreadful enemies. The most likely employment opportunities would be at a vampire-owned business or a business that caters mainly to vampire clientele. It may be possible that the Ministry may have representatives who would speak on behalf of vampires in government situations. Overall, vampires skirt on the fringes and after dark.
Discrimination/Acceptance:
The vast majority of people in the Wizarding and Muggle worlds despise, fear, and discriminate against vampires. There are some who have less fear of them or feel they are misunderstood [ex: "Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires" by Eldred Worple. An interview with 'Sanguini'], but they are the minority. Most wizards and witches would avoid any contact or shun a vampire in their midst, although some miserable souls might actually be attracted to the idea of immortality and the possibility of causing fear in others. I certainly do not think that the image of 'romanticism' in vampirism is backed in the HP series though [that is a pretty modern image perpetuated by writers such as Anne Rice and Bram Stoker.]
Allegiances:
In order to ally with Lord Voldemort you must discuss with him in advance and be accepted, but do not assume that you are 'on his side'.
Ways to Subdue/Attack/Kill Vampires:
Exploding Fluid [creates burst of flames]
Bluebell Flames or 'Incendio' [Fire]
Firey Lasso [Fire]
Liquid Sunlight [Potion that will cause deadly exposure to sunlight if used correctly]
Garlic [Scent keeps them at bay]
Anti-Apparition Spells [although they can still transform into bats at will]
Powerful Stunners and Petrification Spells [temporarily subdues]
other...? [Recommend in a reply post if you have more to add]
Notes on Religion:
For the purpose of being true to canon influences, vampires will remain secular in their portrayal. In other words, since Jo does not use many direct references to religion [or Christianity] in her books, neither will we do so here. Because of this, 'holy water' will be considered a Muggle representation of a potion that wizard vampire hunters use against them [possibly Liquid Sunlight] and crosses will not be a religious symbol but an ancient rune. [The cross or cruciform shape goes back well beyond Christianity and has had a multitude of meanings in cultures all around the globe. I think this fits.]
UNACCEPTABLE:
Any crossover references related to films, books, television, etc... This is Harry Potter and not a crossover RP. If things start becoming too muddled with outside influences then I will have to pull in the reins. This means that the vampires we are dealing with are based off of traditional ancient myths not from Anne Rice, Underworld, Bra Stoker, Buffy, or any other modern vampire myth. Don't use lingo specific to a film - that is considered crossover. Do not reference characters from books or films - also crossover. The only vampires that should be known names are the ones that are featured on the Famous Vampire cards which can be seen on the HP Lexicon. Repeat: Always remember this is canon Harry Potter and stay in perspective of what this site is about.
Warnings:
Due to the fact that there is a strong need for things to not get way out of hand with crossovers and posting that goes against these guidelines, I will be instituting a warning system. OOC warnings will be issued, and if they are not edited or behavior altered, I will be placing members in warning status. Second level warnings that are not heeded will result in account suspension. [Note: This is going to be instituted all over the board not just for this group, so dont feel special. I don't expect you will purposely break rules anyway.]
To prove that you have read this in its entirety, you are required to type the word 'Lumos' in the word verification section on your application in order to be accepted. This is to prevent skimming of rules.
Jo's Famous Vampires Cards
1. Sir Herbert Varney
1858-1889.
Short-lived (by undead standards) Victorian Vampire who preyed upon women in London during the 1880s. Was subsequently captured and killed by a special squad from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. [This is likely a reference to 'Jack the Ripper' and would explain why the Muggles were never able to determine who was behind the attacks in Victorian London.]
2. Amarillo Lestoat
1776-1977.
Flamboyant american vampire. Author of A Vampire's Monologue - intended to bore the reader into a stupor making him/her easier prey for vampires. 'Lestoat' is a pun on the name 'Lestat,' the main character of Anne Rice's vampire novel Interview with a Vampire. [This suggests to me that Jo is not a fan of Anne Rice's take on Vampires at all, sort of similar to her slam on Beatrix Potter books.]
3. Lady Carmilla Sanguina
1561-1757.
Bathed in the blood of her victims to retain her youthful beauty.
4. Blodwyn Bludd
1923 - Unknown.
Known as the "vampire from the Valleys". Famous for singing to his victims in a sonorous bass baritone, before bitting their necks.
5. Count Vlad Drakul
1390 - Unknown.
Notorious vampire who inspired the fictional Count Dracula created by Bram Stoker. Father of Vlad the Impaler. [This suggests to me that at least some of what is portrayed in Bram Stoker's Dracula fits with her ideas of canon vampires, although which elements we still cant say.]
[This list may be edited and updated in the future - changes will be noted and sent out via PM or linked to the calendar. Vampires are required to keep up to date with site regulations - not doing so may result in warnings or suspension of the character.]
[Vampire Character List:]
There will be no more than ten active vampires on the board at one time total. If a vampire is not posted for more than 3 weeks, they will be archived and removed from the active list. If a new vampire applies and is accepted in that time, they will be given post access and the other vamipre will have to wait for an opening in order to actively post again.
